Ministers urged to recall parliament amid warnings patients are dying needlessly due through inaction

The crisis engulfing the NHS will continue until Easter, health leaders have warned, as senior doctors accused ministers of letting patients die needlessly through inaction.

More than a dozen trusts and ambulance services have declared critical incidents in recent days, with soaring demand, rising flu and Covid cases and an overstretched workforce piling pressure on the health service.

But amid warnings that up to 500 people a week may be dying due to delays in emergency care alone, and of oxygen for seriously ill patients running out in parts of England, NHS leaders warned more chaos was expected until April.

“It seems likely that the next three months will be defined by further critical incidents needing to be declared and the quality of care being compromised,” said Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, which represents the whole healthcare system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil have doubled down on their commitment to disruptive climate “civil resistance” after Extinction Rebellion announced new tactics prioritising “relationships over roadblocks”.

“It’s 2023 and XR has quit,” Just Stop Oil said in a statement. “But it’s 2023, and we are barrelling down the highway to the loss of ordered civil society, as extreme weather impacts tens of millions, as our country becomes unrecognisable … there is now a need to face reality.

“We must move from disobedience into civil resistance – this is what the nurses and paramedics are doing. They are on the frontline of the harm being wreaked on us and have said no more.”

Insulate Britain said its supporters remained prepared to go to prison. “Insulate Britain supporters remain committed to civil resistance as the only appropriate and effective response to the reality of our situation in 2023,” its statement said.

Extinction Rebellion changes tactics

UK Extinction Rebellion has announced as a New Year’s Resolution a change of tactics. The focus has shifted to disrupting government instead of engaging in disruptive protest. Part of XR’s move is promoting their ‘The Big One’ campaign starting 21 April 2023.

As we ring in the new year, we make a controversial resolution to temporarily shift away from public disruption as a primary tactic. We recognise and celebrate the power of disruption to raise the alarm and believe that constantly evolving tactics is a necessary approach. What’s needed now most is to disrupt the abuse of power and imbalance, to bring about a transition to a fair society that works together to end the fossil fuel era. Our politicians, addicted to greed and bloated on profits won’t do it without pressure.

We must be radical in our response to this crisis and determined in our efforts to address the climate and ecological emergency, even if it means taking a different approach than before. In a time when speaking out and taking action are criminalised, building collective power, strengthening in number and thriving through bridge-building is a radical act.

XR is committed to including everyone in this work and leaving no one behind, because everyone has a role to play. This year, we prioritise attendance over arrest and relationships over roadblocks, as we stand together and become impossible to ignore.

New year, new start

I’m suggesting that UK politics was so chaotic in 2022. WTF really. WTF was that floppy-haired useless twat? Can’t we just agree that he’s – he was – just doesn’t measure up to anything? Are you seriously suggesting that that inadequate floppy-haired total nothingness was adequate to govern UK? That’s so insulting – that such an inadequate was proposed to be in charge of UK. And then you really did. After giving us such an inadequate, totally – I’m finding the words difficult here. What you did is provide the most inappropriate person and the with Liz Truss???

ed: Liz Truss: A different dimension of Conservative madness.

ed: WTF Let’s say it What the Fuck? What the Fuck? You gave us Boris who was totally inappropriate as a PM because he lies easier than breathing. Then you gave us Liz Truss? At least I know my madness …

I can accept that the World is mad but I’m not sure that you should be promoting totally incompetent. mad. people to positions of power …

2am: Actually, You shouldn’t promote mad fuckers to be PM.

ed: Yes it’s New Years Eve but I still have so much more competence. There is competence and there is the opposite (mad or drunk or like Boris never ever fucking ever never grounded)

2.10am The Daily Mail promoted nutter Liz Truss.
